Common questions
Questions we hear a lot
If you don't see your question here, our intake team is happy to help — just reach out.
How do I get started?
The easiest first step is our intake form — it takes about five minutes and asks a few questions about what you're working on, your insurance, and what you're looking for in a therapist. From there, we'll match you with a clinician whose training and availability fits your situation, and you can book your first session online. If you'd prefer to talk to someone first, you can also reach out to our intake team or schedule a free 15-minute consultation.
What if I don't know what I want to work on?
That's one of the most common things we hear, and it's completely okay. Most people come in with a general sense that something isn't quite right rather than a specific diagnosis or goal. Your therapist's job in the first few sessions is to help you figure out what you're actually working with — you don't have to have it figured out before you start.
What happens in the first session?
The first session is mostly about getting to know each other. Your therapist will ask about what brought you in, your background, and what you're hoping to get out of therapy — but you only share what feels comfortable. You don't need to prepare anything, and you don't need to have all the answers. It's also a chance for you to see if the fit feels right. If it doesn't, that's useful information too.
Do you accept my insurance?
Yes, we accept most major insurance plans in North Carolina, including Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare, Carolina Complete Health, and Partners Health Management. The full list of accepted plans is here, along with information about self-pay rates and our income-based rate options.
How do you match me with a therapist?
When you complete our intake form, your responses are reviewed by our intake team — not an algorithm. We look at what you're working on, your preferences (like therapist gender, modality, or scheduling), and the specific clinical training of our therapists, and we recommend the clinicians who are the best fit. You can also browse our team directly and choose your own therapist if you'd prefer.
What if my therapist isn't the right fit?
It happens, and it's normal — the relationship between you and your therapist matters as much as the technique. If you feel like it's not working, let us know and we'll help you find a better match. There's no awkwardness on our end and no commitment after your first session. Finding the right fit sometimes takes a try or two, and we'd rather get it right than have you stay with someone who isn't working for you.
What does therapy cost, and what if I can't afford it?
Out-of-pocket costs depend on your insurance plan — many of our clients pay only a copay, and some pay nothing if they've met their deductible. For clients without coverage or with out-of-network plans, we offer transparent self-pay rates and income-based reduced fees. Our insurance and fees page walks through all of this in detail, including FSA/HSA eligibility and what to expect at billing.
Do you offer in-person and online sessions?
Both. Our office is in Elizabeth, Charlotte, and we see clients in-person and virtually across North Carolina. You can choose whichever format works best for your schedule, and many clients switch between the two depending on the week.
